Why This Room Works

It all begins with an idea.

As Easter is around the corner, I thought I’d write a post on this dining room and why it looks visually appealing.

All the elements of design were taken into consideration when designing this space. I utilized repetition in color, primarily utilizing off white and blue as my main colors, with analogous green and complementary orange as accent colors. The beige backdrop serves as a neutral and works well with the saturated hue of blue. Notice the variations of blue which make the design more interesting. In addition, note the hints of blue in the artwork. It’s a gray blue but it works because the key is to blend, not match perfectly.

The other element of consistency in this room is the style. I mixed a farmhouse-style table with more traditional elements in a chinoiserie style. The chinoiserie style is reflected in the trellis curtains, ginger jars, captain’s chair blue fabric, and side chairs. It looks pleasing to the eye because of the cohesive color palette and repetition of two styles.

The wood elements and velvet chair fabric provide texture while shiny gold lamps provide a contrasting element. I chose art on one wall and a mirror on the opposite for variation. Additionally, the black mirror ties in with the black frame, and the black color provides some elegance to the room. The reflection of the front yard in the mirror makes for a beautiful scene and the triptych (three pieces of complementary art) is a much-needed break from the symmetry in this room.
